Developing a Photo-Lit Collage

A collage is a collection of pictures which represents the creator's mental images on a theme or topic. In this activity, you will create a collage to depict the way you imagine, or visualize, scenes from To Kill a Mockingbird. Using the following Web site, you will select photos from federal archives as the pictures for your collage. Choose Depression-era photos from the state of Alabama, the setting of To Kill a Mockingbird, then print out those which seem to illustrate parts of the novel to you.

Day 1:

1) Select 6 photographs from the Great Depression which illustrate part of the setting of To Kill a Mockingbird.  

• Copy your selected photo and paste it into a word document.  

• Resize your photo if need be so that you are printing no more than 2 pages.

2) Create a 3-5 sentence caption to describe each photo and explain its relationship to the novel. 

• Type your captions on the same 2 page word document.

• Your caption should explain the picture as if it is a scene from the book.

3) Print your completed 2 page word document by the end of class.  

Day 2 (half of class):

4) Compile your photos and captions to construct a collage.

• You will do this on construction paper. 

• Your collage should be visually appealing, have a title, 6 photos each with a caption relating to that photo.

Grading:

6 relevant pictures – 12pts

6 captions that clearly relate the picture to the book – 18pts

Attractive, easy to follow collage – 10pts

Total – 40pts
